Social vs a site

Linktree is a list. A website is a place.

Linktree is a list. A website is a place. People mash those together because both have a URL and both show up in an Instagram bio. They are not the same product. Linktree (and Later, Beacons, a Notion page, a Carrd of buttons) solves a problem Instagram created: one link in the bio. It does not give you hours a stranger can trust, a phone a thumb can hit, or a page Google treats as the business.

A list of buttons is a hallway. “Menu, bookings, merch, TikTok, Venmo.” Fine as a directory. Weak as the only door. The customer who typed your name into Google, or tapped the website field on a map listing, did not ask for a menu of your other apps. They asked for the shop. Send them to nine more decisions and a lot of them leave.

None of this is a crusade against Linktree. If you post every day and you need a switchboard behind the bio, keep the switchboard. Put a real homepage in slot one. That is the move.

What a link-in-bio is for

You have more than one destination and Instagram will not give you more than one link. A tour. A drop. A fundraiser week. A YouTube, an Etsy, a booking tool you already answer. The list exists so you do not overwrite the bio every Friday. That is a real job. It is a small job.

It is also a rental. Linktree is someone else’s domain in the default plan. you.Linktree looks like a you.Linktree. Customers notice. Paid plans can map a custom name. You still do not own the layout the way you own files on a host. You have a login and a stack of buttons. If the company changes the plan, the brand, or the URL scheme, your hallway changes with it.

A grid without a website plus a Linktree is two rentals taped together. You still cannot print that on a van. You still cannot put it on a contract and call it the company. you@yourname.com and yourname.com are the names that look like a business. A bio link is a workaround.

When the list is enough

You are a person, not a shop, and the list is the product: podcast, newsletter, store, calendar. You might quit in 60 days. Every customer already lives in your Instagram DMs and you are fine with that. You will not answer a form. Skip the site. A dead homepage under a live Linktree is clutter.

The moment a URL starts paying for itself is when someone asks for the website and you paste a Linktree, and they go quiet. Or a venue, a lender, a reporter, a city permit wants a page, not a stack of icons. Or Google Business Profile has a website field and you are sending map traffic into a wall of buttons. Or you want one sentence, hours, a phone, and photos that sit still when you stop posting. That is a homepage.

Put the list second

That is a marketing website: one long page or a few sections, phone-ready, a form or the buttons you need, title and meta tags, hosting setup, help pointing the domain, one round of changes. Most standard jobs finish in under 72 hours when the brief is clear. Then you put that URL in the Instagram bio. If you still need the other buttons, Linktree can sit behind a single “more links” on the site. The stranger gets the shop first. The fan gets the extras.

It is not a cart, an app, or a members area at this price. If you need checkout, we quote a store. If you already sell on Etsy or Square, the brochure can point there — that is what LazerMerch does. We do not sell a national prize. Live work on this shop’s own sites is on /work/. Labeled SAMPLE pages for trades are on /examples/.

The $49/month hosted website is the floor: name, hours, phone, three photos. You host it. hosting included on $49/month. Enough for a lot of local businesses who only needed to stop sending people to a list.
