Leaving a builder

The GoDaddy builder is rent. Leaving is a rebuild.

Cheap Fast Websites · updated August 25, 2026

GoDaddy sold you a domain. Then the builder sat next to it like a kiosk. Convenient on day one. You still pay rent. Export is not a full website. Leaving is a rebuild. Anyone who tells you it is an “export and go” is selling a hope. Price that in before you spend another year in the editor.

That is how builders work. Wix, Squarespace, Weebly, Canva sites, GoDaddy Website Builder — same shape. You design inside their walls. You leave, you start over. If you opened this tab because the monthly bill feels like a second rent, or the editor will not do the one thing you need, this is the honest version of the move. Read leaving Wix and leaving Squarespace if the brand on the invoice is different. The mechanics match. Same math as the monthly builder bill.

We do not “convert” a GoDaddy builder site. We rebuild the public pages from your facts and photos, then help you point the name. You keep the domain. That is the whole trick. Custom layout, a phone that works on a thumb, a form that arrives, title and meta tags, hosting setup, one round of changes. Most finish in under 72 hours when the brief is clear. We do not clone your GoDaddy theme pixel for pixel.

What you keep when you leave

The domain, if you bought it. yourname.com is a name at the registrar. It is not the GoDaddy site. You can keep the name at GoDaddy and host the files somewhere you control. That is normal. That click is yours. We will tell you what to type. We will not steal the name. DNS is not instant. The old builder page can hang around for a chunk of a day while nameservers catch up. That is normal. It is not “the internet is broken.” See a domain is not a website and how to point a domain.

ThingUsually
The domainYours at GoDaddy or wherever you registered it. Do not let it expire.
Email on that domainCan stay at GoDaddy while the website moves. Do not mix DNS blindly. Email on your domain
The builder pagesYou rewrite them. Copy the words you still want. Throw out lorem.
PhotosDownload them. Phone photos of new work beat a stretched stock hero. Phone photos
SEO “boost” add-onsLeave them. Title, meta, Open Graph go on the new page. Not a ranking prize.

You also keep the Google Business Profile, the reviews, the phone number, the customers. GoDaddy never owned those. What you do not keep is the layout as a portable website. The builder is a login. A login is not files. Ask who owns the files before you call it yours.

The move, in order

  1. Buy the new site. Pay on /sale/. Brief the current GoDaddy URL, the words you still like, photos of the real place, the registrar login in your hands (not emailed to a stranger). Free check first if you want the score. What to send.
  2. We draft. A person proofs it. You send one list of changes. Extra rounds quoted. Live on a host you control or ours. Bluehost is what this shop already uses. Your host is fine if it can serve ordinary files.
  3. Point DNS last. You still click at GoDaddy. We tell you nameservers or an A record. Do not point at an empty host. How to point a domain.
  4. Test the form on a phone, on cellular. Lock icon, tap-to-call, hours that match the door. Then cancel the builder plan. Not before. Do not cancel first. That is how shops go dark. Replace without going dark.

If you like the editor and you will actually log in next month, stay. Leaving for sport is a waste. Leave because you are done being the IT person, the template looks like every other GoDaddy page in the zip code, or you want files that survive a cancelled subscription. If the page already works — lock, tap-to-call, a form you have tested — stay. A pretty rebuild of a working contact path is a vanity project.

Money, and what this is not

$49/month hosted website if you only needed hours and a phone this weekend. hosting included on $49/month. You still do not own a portable codebase. Rent does not become a down payment on the next apartment.

It is not a cart, a member portal, or an app. Those get a separate quote. Basic SEO is a title, a meta description, and Open Graph. We do not promise #1 on Google. We do not sell a national prize for “best GoDaddy migration.” If the last person vanished with the login, you still need the domain at the registrar. Designer disappeared. See what happens after you pay.
